Author Interview:
Can you tell us about your book in 10 words or less?
Boy's dog coaches a soccer team by kissing kids and making them laugh.
How long did it take you to write your book?
It's a children's book, and it's hard to say how long it took because my co-author (my 6-year-old) and I gathered ideas from children for months before we started writing. We then did a lot of brainstorming before putting words to paper. This process spanned about a year.
What was your favorite scene to write?
In one scene, the main character, Bash, realizes that he should share his dog, Lucy, with a Special Olympics team, and that Lucy really wants to help the other team. He lets go of his jealousy and shares his dog with the other kids, even though it's really hard for him.
If you could cast anyone to play some of the main characters, who would you choose?
I have already cast them. The main character, Bash, is my son, Michael. His team mates are Michael's friends. The coach is a coach I have known for many years. And Lucy is our dog who died suddenly of cancer.
Is there anyone that inspires you to write?
My son, Michael, inspires me to write because he's such a book lover and gets so much out of reading. If he's having a bad day, a book calms him down. If he wants to learn something, he searches for a book. He's always quoting the books he reads.
Cats or Dogs?
A dog inspired us to write this series. Our dog, Lucy, died suddenly of cancer at the age of 6, giving us no warning until a few days before she died. She even jogged with me every day up until the day she died. I was touched and inspired by her bravery and goodness.
Print, ebook, or audiobook?
I always read hard copies and love audiobooks. Just as I was writing this, my son invited me to listen to a "Nate the Great" audiobook with him. Recently, Michael and I recorded an audiobook version of our first book, "Bash and Lucy Fetch Confidence." It was a fun and rewarding experience. Kids tell us they love hearing the voices of the real people behind the characters we created.
Current Favorite Song?
My favorite song right now is a song my older son composed, produced and released on a German record label. It's called "Come Right Down."
