  The Connection

Description:

Connection by Dana Claire

Beatrice Walker thought she lived in a normal world—that is until she learned she’s a living hostel for an alien energy source, and apparently the answer to preventing extinction. Bea has no memory of her last moments with her mother. The week they’d gone missing is a complete mystery. Suddenly moved back to her hometown with her father, Bea has rekindled her friendship with her two best friends—and seems to have caught the attention of an arrogant, yet gorgeous boy named Cash Kingston. But there’s more to Cash than his annoying attitude and good looks. Cash isn’t human, and he’s now in charge of protecting Bea from those who know what she keeps safe inside her: the energy source that once belonged to his murdered girlfriend. Tensions mount as Bea learns her energy source must be paired with the one Cash holds to protect both their planets from an imminent threat. But what Bea doesn’t realize is there’s more to her than being human a host, that her feelings for Cash are not just a prophetic plan that will save their planets, and that the fate of everything lies in her choices.

Guest Review by Suzie M.

Beatrice Walker is an ordinary girl. At least, that's what she thinks. Living in a small town with her father, Beatrice's only claim to fame is that she's the new girl at Cartwright High. And, since she only moved back to town after her mother's untimely death, she's not even actually new. But one day, she officially becomes old news when another family moves back to town. The Kingstons, Cash and his sister, Tasha. Both are beautiful to the point that it might just be otherworldly.

Beatrice notices that she and Cash immediately have a strange, heart-racing connection that she cannot explain away. Things start getting stranger and stranger around Cash and his sister, and Beatrice soon discovers that she and her father are connected to the Kingstons in a way that she could never have predicted, and that her own life is at stake in a celestial game that she didn't sign up for.

'The Connection' is a fantastic read and one that I expect to become an instant YA classic. Dana Claire has a way of writing teenagers that makes them seem relatable, but still realistic and makes you root for them from the very start.

The romance between Beatrice and Cash was everything I wanted. Sizzling, energetic and, because of a secret on his side that I won't spoil here, occasionally heart-wrenching. I loved watching them slowly fall for each other and watching their chemistry ignite more and more with every chapter.

This was overall an exciting, fast-paced, funny and romantic adventure of a novel that is bound to keep any reader entertained from the first page to the very last! I can't wait to see how the plot is going to develop in the next book. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for its release date!

Excerpt:

Chapter Ten

Silence. For moments after the gun went off, all that existed was silence. By the time I opened my eyes, the others had arrived. I watched as if the world moved in slow motion. Cash’s mouth opened and closed in a ringing roar, explaining to the others what transpired.

I was frozen with fear but also with something else: a nagging memory of the knife. It could kill Cash—somehow, I knew that. I shook my head. He was so powerful. He shook the streetlights, pulled off two car doors, and melted a metal gun—surely a knife wouldn’t cause any lasting damage. But I knew better. The knife could kill him.

At some point Tasha guided me home. She closed the front door behind us. Then she laced her fingers through mine and led me up the stairs and into the bathroom across from my bedroom. No one had said anything to me on the street. Not even my father. They were all in cover-up mode, quickly conversing then dispensing orders. I stood numbly. So numb, I didn’t react when Samantha melted the unmarked vehicle into a pile of metal; or when Mark and Paul dragged the bodies off the sidewalk and disappeared from sight with incredible speed. I didn’t react when my father and Cash cleaned up the blood left behind. I was too numb to react to any of it. I simply let Tasha steer me back to the house, thankful to have someone else in control.

It wasn’t until she closed the bathroom door and turned the shower on, that she spoke. “I’m not going to ask if you’re okay because it’s expected for you not to be.” She pulled at the hem of my shirt. I automatically lifted my arms like a child being undressed by their mother. The tank top weighed heavily with blood and sweat. I sucked in a deep breath as she pulled the wet shirt over my head. I had no idea if the fluid was mine, Claude’s, or a mixture of both, and the sickening thought swirled around in the pit of my stomach like water into a drain.

Tasha wrapped the soiled shirt into a ball and stuffed it into a small garbage bag from under the counter. My gaze lifted to my reflection in the mirror. Crimson dots formed under my neck from the dagger. I traced my fingers over the spots, dragging the blood into a fine line.

Tasha eyed my throat. “It’s barely a scratch.” She grabbed my hand, sending heat throughout my body, and the tiny marks disappeared. Steam blurred the edges of the glass, closing in on our images. Within seconds, we disappeared into a white fog.

“Can I get you anything?” She moved toward the door.

“No, thank you.” My voice was hoarse.

She grabbed the handle to the door and paused. Never turning around, she said, “Sometimes we have to endure sacrifices of few for the survival of many. It’s a burden you will have to get used to. It is the burden your destiny could end up bearing.”

And with that she was gone.

“To begin with The Connection is an interesting book to wrap your head around, the opening chapter leaves patches and mystery which I find a good thing, it dragged me in and made me want to figure out why this dystopian time was like what it was. The main characters name is Beatrice Walker and the story, though not followed from her perspective, is based all around her. After the next couple of chapters, you get the concept of the whole new world and its so bitter sweet and beautifully unusual that you just want to discover more and more about this story. The made-up memories that are written have so much meaning and you get to experience these moments all over again. Then ending is so amazing, Dana Claire really knows how to leave a reader wanting more.”-John Kerry, Let’s Talk Knowledge

“After the first chapter, I could tell that this book was going to resemble The Lux Series. The lux series is one of my all-time favorites, so I was genuinely interested in seeing where the author takes this story. I'm happy to say that I was not disappointed. I honestly couldn't turn the pages fast enough. One thing I was not anticipating was the never-ending action. I loved how there was never a dull moment, as our main characters seemed to never catch a break.  Dana Claire has a way of getting under your skin because Beatrice and Cash have made it to my favourite characters list. I can't wait to see what the author does next! I really hope it's the sequel to this novel. That cliff-hanger at the end makes me want to read book two as soon as possible.”- Jessica Marie, The Mermaid Reader

“Enthralling and well- crafted story. The author’s descriptions are so vivid you feel as though you are in the book. The plot of the story is suspenseful and hard to predict the next move because right when you think you know what is going to happen the story goes into a different direction. Dana Claire took me on a roller coaster of emotions all the way from the first page. I found myself not being able to stop until I completed the book. The Connection is indeed an outstanding and ingenious read. I eagerly look forward to reading more of her books.”- Chinnie N., Amazon

“Sci-fi fantasy can be challenging, but Author Dana Claire did a fabulous job with this novel. The characters are great. They develop throughout the book in such a powerful way. I love Bea, AND I love her with Cash. The Connection is a book I could not wait to read every day. I loved falling into this story because I thought about the plot even when I wasn’t reading it. A telling sign it’s a great novel!”-Hey It’s Carly Rae

About Dana Claire

Connection by Dana Claire

Author, Dana Claire, believes that a good story is made through strong character development. When readers become attached to the characters’ emotional state and are invested in their objectives, the readers are there for the long haul backing the characters and their emotions. How cool is it to read a book and think about the characters long after you’ve read the last page? She believes that the beauty of reading is that one can live a hundred lives within the stories of books. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be a vampire, slay a dragon, or use a time machine, there’s a book for that.
