Blog Tour: Mercy's Magic by P.J. Day & Elizabeth Basque

Release date: September 18th 2013
Purchase: Amazon

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Mercedes Cruz is a Bruja--or Witch, in Spanish. Just like many first generation sons and daughters of immigrant parents, Mercy has embraced America, its culture, and its customs in their entirety. But Brujeria or Mexican Witchcraft is deeply tied with Mercy's heritage and her family's past, and because she's neglected such a large chunk of her identity, Mercy now stands a stunted witch in her 30's.
Mercy, also a single mother of five year old Terra, who may also share her attributes, has decided to start her own private investigation firm in the heart of Orange County, California. She's decided to use her budding talents to recruit business, solve challenging cases, and help those in the community who lack a voice and who may be too afraid to report crimes due to their legal status --leaving criminals to freely exploit those who choose to live in the shadows.

Review:
 ★★★★☆

This is a decent start of a what will be a good series. I enjoyed the characters of Mercy and her friend Lily. Mercy is pretty strong willed woman that knows that she can handle herself. I think her daughter is sweet and will be a powerful character in the series. I feel like they could still be fleshed out a little more, but they are still good as they are.

I also enjoyed the story. I felt it moved a little fast at times and could have used a little more detail. I never completely lost myself in it. I wish the book had been longer. It ended on a good note, with the main issue nicely wrapped up, but with just enough of a hook to make me want to read the next one. I am eager to see how Mercy grows in her power and in her business. I also want to read more about Terra. I had really wanted to know what she was drawing the day Mercy was getting set to go see the big bad guy. I also can't wait to see what happens with Ariel. Can people really change themselves so  completely?

My favorite character has to be the aunt. She is caring but blunt. She knows that Mercy has a long way to go to reach her potential and wants to see her succeed. She will push her and be harsh with her, but only because she cares so much for her. Even when she is most disappointed in Mercy, you can see the love she has for her.

All in all this was a good read. I enjoyed the characters, plot, and setting. As I said before, i just wish there had been a little more to it. I recommend this to anyone that would enjoy a good story with a willful female investigator that is determined to do everything she can to do her job well, while being a loving mom to her daughter, all the while dealing with magical abilities.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
P.J. Day is the author of the King's Blood series, and the Sunset Prophecy. He lives with the two of the most extroverted daughters on planet earth, along with a feral house cat that has been mistaken for a mountain lion, and a wonderful wife who understands her husband's need to put his ramblings in print. Southern California serves as the backdrop for his inspiration and indignation.
